What is virtual dermatology?

What is virtual dermatology?

We’re excited to announce a partnership with DermCafé—Canada's Virtual Dermatology Clinic where you can book a virtual visit with a Dermatologist in less than one week!

Dermatology is one of the few visual specialties in the field of medicine. That means that often a diagnosis can be made by simply looking at the skin. This makes dermatology uniquely effectively for virtual care.

DermCafé uses their PIPEDA-compliant photo-platform to enable safe and effective care.

How does it work?

  1. Get a referral. For your dermatology appointment to be covered by OHIP or UHIP you will first need a referral from a doctor. You can ask for a referral from your family physician, one of DrugSmart's on-call physicians, or one of DermCafé's family physicians.
  2. Book your dermatologist appointment. Once your doctor submits your Online Referral Form to DermCafé you will get an email link to book your video visit with a Dermatologist. You must register using this specific email link.
  3. Get a diagnosis via video call and submitted photos. Your prescriptions are delivered for free to your doorstep courtesy of DrugSmart.

What types of skin conditions can DermCafé treat?

Since starting in May 2020, DermCafé has seen over 2000 patients! Below are examples of common conditions that a DermCafé Dermatologist can treat:
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Melasma
  • Allergic/irritant contact dermatitis
  • Superficial skin infection (e.g. athlete’s foot)
  • Hair loss
  • Vitiligo
  • Hives

What happens if I need an in-person visit?

Most Dermatology visits can be resolved without in-person contact. If, however, you require in-person care (e.g. for a skin biopsy), DermCafé will facilitate a seamless transition to an appropriate physical Dermatology clinic. Your Dermatologist will inform you of the next steps.

If you have no access to a Dermatologist within reasonable proximity, they work with local primary care physicians to guide your care in a safe and timely fashion.

Stay tuned for collaborative blog posts with DermCafé where we will discuss everything important in skin health news, from skin cancer prevention tips to skincare product recommendations!
